The top ring is used to push all the branches in the newly formed top whorl downwards at the same time.

The top ring must be fitted before late July when the branches have just stopped growing, but remain pliable and must be removed before the new growing season starts. 

You will get the best result when you mount the top ring with pegs in order to keep it in the correct position.

Branches of the top whorl can be re-spaced to disguise gaps by clipping to the spokes of the ring with additional pegs.
